Choosing the correct harness is one of the most important decisions that a climber can make - fit and function are essential to get right as your harness is the part of your fall prevention system that holds you - the climber.

A climbing harness should have a snug fit but allow ease of movement (climbing etc...)  When fitted it also shouldn't be as tight as it can go but it needs to have a good length (at least 10cm) of waist belt webbing pulled through the buckle.  Trying the harness on while wearing similar clothing to that which you will when climbing then hanging in the harness is greatly recommended to check for any sore spots that there might be - It might not be comfortable but you shouldn't have pain!

There is a great variety of harnesses available, though you can use any harness for any discipline some are better suited for specific styles, compromising in areas to enhance others.

Harnesses built with Sport Climbing in mind tend to be constructed using lighter materials, mimicking the disciplines focus on dynamic performance, carrying pretty much only quickdraws you also don't need as many gear loops thus saving more weight.  Have a look at the DMM Maverick 2, the female specific DMM Vertesse or the Petzl Hirundos Harness

Traditional rock climbing requires gear which needs to be carried, more gear loops help with racking (organising) for rapid and easy selection, four or five is normal but up-to seven possible.  More padding and wider leg loops are common increasing comfort while belaying, adjustable leg loops increase the variety of clothing that can be comfortably worn underneath for year round climbing.  The DMM Renegade 2 and the Petzl Adjama harness for men and the DMM Puma 2 and Petzl Luna for women are good examples.

All manufacturers have a few General Purpose harnesses in their ranges such as the DMM Viper, woman's DMM Vixen or the revised but eternally classic Petzl Corax.  Fully featured with excellent value for money they are great as entry-level harnesses as well as more experienced rockstars.
